SNUFF is a documentary exploring the myth and history of the Snuff Film. A Snuff film, as defined in the documentary, is a film that features a murder onscreen, usually preceded by sex, made explicitly for profit. It is not death that just happens to be caught on film. The person who is killed on camera dies for the sole purpose of making a lot of money off that scene.

The documentary analyzes the relationships between war, cult films, serial killers and pornography to prove whether or not this myth is, in fact, reality. Director Paul von Stoetzel interviews former FBI Profilers, Cultural Academics, and Film Historians with differing opinions and lets them all express their thoughts on the subject. Many people have questioned the existence of snuff films and the FBI still vehemently denies that they exist, but Mark L. Rosen, one of the producers of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre knows better.

The most interesting part of the film are the stories told by Rosen. He talks about a Russian child pornography ring whose leaders were arrested after causing the death of at least one child and he describes watching a real snuff film, a story he has told only a selected few people before. He was approached by a Philippine investor who wanted him to distribute an "adult" film. The man invited Rosen to watch it in his hotel room. While a bodyguard guarded the door of that hotel room Rosen viewed a violent S&M type film in which a plastic bag is put over a womans head before her throat is being cut with a butcher knife. He goes on tearfully saying that there's no way special effects were involved, as those type of special effects didn't exist in the 70s.
